Plan

Ireland

Scotland

Over all I think I will be using Scotland to make assets over Ireland as the old broken buildings in Scotland are a lot more interesting then the ones in Ireland. I also have always loved Scotland more then Ireland plus I’m going on holiday there so I can get my own photos.

This was my first version of my asset list. I changed this to be more objects then world decoration.

When I went to Scotland a lot of house where by them self’s. I decided to make a wood pack because its cold in Scotland. A lone house with supplies to keep them self’s warm. This is why I have changed the asset to match more with the lone houses you see.

I also re-did the mood board to show what style I wanted. I will not be redoing the mind map as it would take time and I’ve already made the mood board and asset list.

Textures

The wood textures I tried to make myself. I think if i ever make my own game or help texture a game for a company it would be good practice to make your own textures. For the wood textures I followed a tutorial and then added a real wood texture over that but at low opacity.

This is the final for the wood pack assets. All the wood does look the same but some are darker and some are lighter. I’ve done this because the owner of the axe would cut down trees near their house. This would lead to a lot of their things being the same type of wood.
OVER VIEW
Over all this project was great. You can really see how I improve through the asset pack. I even can see I’ve improved from the first textures I made for the pack. I think the next time I make an asset pack it will be a lot better then this one as I’ll know what to do from the start with the mind maps and mood board (they aren’t very good).
1. How effective was your modelling? What went well? What could you improve about each model?
My modeling was quite good. This is the first time for me and a lot of other students to do modeling on maya or modelling in general. I haven’t modeled anything put a person in the past but modelling some objects for an assets pack was very fun and rewarding. The models all had their similarities from the wood either being darker or light because they are from the same tree or the shapes mostly being 3D rectangles.
2. How effective was your UV mapping? What went well? What could you improve about each set of UV’s?
I started doing UV mapping at the start of the project when I didn’t know how to texture and that’s what we were learning in class. Once I found out how to texture I didn’t do UV mapping as my modeling was mostly only one texture. I did UV map the light and the axe as they had more than one texture and I had to lay out where each one could go. I did try to a least organize then some I forgot and did after texturing.
3. How effective was your Texturing? What went well? What could you improve about your Texturing for each model?
I wanted to try making my own textures so i watched a tutorial online for wood textures. With help from my texture I made a good looking wood texture in different shades. I always struggle with finding things online that are food which is why I like to make them myself. Though as the deadline got closer I did have to look up a few textures like metal and grass. If I could improve I’d like to work on texturing a window modeled with a wall. All the ones I found online were looking outside. This is why I didn’t finish a house I modeled as I couldn’t finish the texturing.
4. Do you feel you successfully made an asset pack for your chosen location?
I’m honestly not sure if I succeeded in making a good asset pack for the place I chose. I wasn’t sure or confident on what I was doing at the start of this project but at the end of it I’m glad of what I’ve done. I’ve moved my original unsure ideas at the beginning into the final idea of a wood pack. I’ve explained in one of my blogs about how I changed ideas and why.
5. Are there any other things you could improve? Time management, presentations skills, rendering?
The biggest problem I had with this project was motivation. When I was in secondary school I did a lot of things that were not creative. This led to creativity being a fun hobby that I did after school but now I do it for school and for a hobby it drains me and I’m just not motivated to do it. I could have also done time management better as I probably could have finished more models if I had started straight away instead of waiting a while like I always do.
6. Peer Feedback (Optional)– Ask a peer to give you feedback on the same areas of your asset pack (Modelling, UVing, Texturing)
Peer Feedback
N/A
7. Targets – From your evaluation and your peer feedback, list the key areas you need to practice/improve on…..
- Not all my textures were good. I wanted the wood to be the same, just darker or lighter to show that around the place there’s only really one type of tree. In the final render they all seemed more the same then I wanted.
- Model with more detail. This is something that I can improve on with texturing. A couple of my models have more detail but because I couldn’t properly texture them I didn’t finish them. The models that I did finish could Have more detail like the light does. The compost bin could have some dirt falling out of the side the axe could have some damage to the metal. Little things like that I should have done when I was modeling.
Unfinished models

6/10 Models where finished and rendered
I couldn’t finish these models as they have more then one texture on them. Yes so does the axe and the light but they are separate models put together unlike these. If I have time I will go back and finish these but as for now I have two other projects I need to finish.

UV Mapping

Here are some of the UV maps I’ve done. They are not the best as I don’t fully understand how to UV map. The dirt UV I forgot to do so it came out looking a bit odd but the texture itself is fine.
Model Progress
I will not show the process for all the models as its mostly the same throughout.

First I modeled each bit of the light separately. The base, chain and lamp. After modeling these I moved them into position and combined them.

For the axe I modeled two separate pieces from an image that I sadly forgot to save and I lost it. I did change the shape a bit and it has no hole at the bottom. In the end this was one of my favorite models. I should do weapon pack.
Problems
The problems I had during this project was from both myself and Maya.
Lets start with my problems. Throughout this project I was unmotivated and lazy. It was only recently when I became motivated to finish it. Since the deadline was coming up I didn’t want to redo anything so I just worked harder on the stuff I hadn’t done. Things like this I’m guessing people will not normally speak about. The flaws I had effected the outcome of my project and that’s something I need to work on.
As for the problems in Maya I had a few. First of installing Maya took a while. Personal I think this is the collages fault. I feel like before collage started they should of sent us a list of things to install and how to install them so we would waste no collage hours. Secondly after I finished my assets list I ran into a problem saving my Maya work. Ever time I finished a model I would save it to start another one but when I came back to that model it would open. It turned out I was saving the wrong file type. I lot of time was wasted as I didn’t know why it wasn’t saving. After finishing my models I start texturing. Again I ran into a problem. I didn’t understand how to texture or UV map. It didn’t help that the ones sir was demonstrating where more advanced then mine so I guessed what to do. Luckily it worked out. After that I found a useful video online about how to texture. It was pretty easy surprisingly.
